Simon Fraser University
Two-Eyed Seeing in Community-Based Healthcare Education
Project Overview
A concise 1-minute micro-learning faculty development module created for the Simon Fraser University School of Medicine. Built for Canvas LMS, the video introduces busy clinical preceptors to the Indigenous framework of “Two-Eyed Seeing” (Etuaptmumk) and demonstrates how combining Indigenous and Western ways of knowing strengthens both patient care and clinical teaching.
Target Audience: Clinical preceptors supervising medical students in community-based settings. Most viewers have no prior exposure to Two-Eyed Seeing, requiring a brief introductory overview rather than a deep dive. Designed specifically for clinicians reviewing training inside Canvas between patients, the module delivers a complete idea in under a minute without assuming the viewer will pause or re-watch.

Explaining a rich cultural and clinical framework like Two-Eyed Seeing within a strict 60-second limit presented a unique narrative challenge. The video needed to deliver immediate value to time-constrained preceptors while adhering strictly to accessible design standards (high contrast, readable typography, burn-in captions) across various device screens without relying on audio playback.
Script & Narrative Structure: The script transitions from a familiar clinical concept (care extends beyond diagnosis) to Two-Eyed Seeing, applies it to a practical example (diabetes management), and concludes with a direct reflective question inviting preceptors to apply the concept to their teaching.
Visual & Scene Progression: Built across five concise scenes, the animation uses an overlapping-circles diagram as a recurring visual anchor. The diabetes scenario features parallel icon tracks (clinical vs. community) that converge on screen to mirror the central diagram. Consistent icon styles, caption pacing, and color palettes tie the segments into one continuous flow rather than a slideshow.
Instructional Video Producer
Scriptwriting & Audio Production: Authored the narrative script and generated high-quality narration using ElevenLabs AI voice synthesis, followed by audio polishing in Adobe Audition.
Asset Creation & Information Design: Vector icons and the central Venn diagram model were crafted in Adobe Illustrator, ensuring high-contrast ratios (~9:1) well above WCAG AA minimums (4.5:1) and adding text labels to all elements so meaning does not depend on color coding alone.
Animation & Accessibility Integration: Keyframed motion and visual transitions in After Effects, ensuring caption timing holds on screen long enough for comfortable reading. Final assembly and burned-in open captions were completed in Premiere Pro to guarantee automatic playback within Canvas without requiring audio.
Contextual Alignment: Framed the module around the widely cited definition of Etuaptmumk (as described by Elders Albert and Murdena Marshall) to ensure accurate, respectful representation appropriate for introductory faculty development.
Delivered an accessible, 60-second instructional asset that effectively introduces clinical preceptors to Two-Eyed Seeing and prompts them to apply multi-perspective approaches in their own teaching.
